It is soon time to apply for an extension of your residence permit if you have plans to continue your studies in the autumn semester of 2021. Apply no earlier than six months before your current permit expires.
If you have a residence permit and will continue studying after your permit expires, you must apply to extend it before your current permit expires.
To be able to receive a permit extension, you must:
- have a valid passport
- be admitted to full-time studies in a higher education program, which requires your presence in Sweden
- have made acceptable progress in your studies. This means that you need to show that you have taken the credits required during the latest permit period. For studies at a university, you must have taken 15 credits in the first year of study, 22.5 credits in the second year and 30 credits in the third and subsequent years.
- be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
- have, or have applied for, a comprehensive health insurance policy.
In the wake of the pandemic, the Swedish Migration Agency has understood that not all students have been able to complete their studies as planned. If the pandemic has affected your possibility of having made acceptable progress, you must clearly indicate in your extension application which components or courses have not been done. You do so by sending in a certificate from your university. You must also describe in detail how your studies have been affected and why you have not been able to complete, for example, your course or your degree project.
