An update from The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) published on 21 April 2021 regarding full-time studies in Sweden notifies the changes made due to the pandemic.
The changes will affect those that have and will apply for a residence permit for studies in 2021.
Regarding the students applying for residence permit for various full-time studies
Migrationsverket is removing the 50% on campus attendance requirement. Meaning, you are able to conduct distance studies without it affecting your application. It is important that you are staying Sweden to conduct your studies.
This is only applicable to programs and courses that were meant to be conducted in person on campus, but due to the pandemic, is conducted online or partially online.
Exception to full-time studies requirement during the Summer
The migration agency maintains the previous exception for to the requirement for full-time studies during June, July, and August.
This means that this year, Migrationsverket is deviating from the general rule for a studies residence permit, which states that you have to leave the country while you are not studying and be located in another country when you apply for a new permit for the coming semester.
The exception is applicable for those currently studying, and those that have finished studying for spring semester 2021 (or soon complete) and is planning to continue studying in the upcoming Fall semester or the 2021/2022 academic year.
Permits can be granted from 1 August
Residence permits for higher education studies can be granted from 1 August 2021, regardless of when the semester starts. Usually the permit period starts 14 days before the start of the semester.
The exception applies to those who are granted a residence permit at colleges and universities fo autumn semester 2021.
The extension of the permit period 2021 does not cover studies in post-secondary courses that is not conducted at an university or college (such as most forms of other studies and vocational training). In those cases, the permit received cannot be longer than two weeks before and after your studies.
